The most common distance leak in amateur golfers

Hip Internal Rotation Restriction

The physical finding that explains more swing faults than any other single screen

Hip internal rotation (IR) is the ability of each hip joint to rotate inward. For a right-handed golfer, this means your lead hip rotating internally through the downswing and follow-through, and your trail hip rotating internally at the top of the backswing.

When this rotation is restricted — extremely common in recreational golfers who sit for extended periods — the body compensates. Rather than rotating through the hip, the motion gets borrowed from the lower back, the knee, or the foot. The kinematic sequence breaks. Power leaks. Distance stalls. And no matter how many lessons you take, the same faults keep showing up.

Thoracic Spine Mobility Deficit

Why your coach can see the fault but your body won't cooperate

The thoracic spine — the middle portion of your back from your shoulder blades to your lower ribs — is the primary rotational engine in the golf swing. A full shoulder turn, proper hip-shoulder separation, and maintaining spine angle through impact all depend directly on T-spine mobility.

When the T-spine can't rotate freely, the body compensates by borrowing rotation from the lower back — which is not designed for rotation under load. The result is simultaneous power loss and injury risk. Back pain that shows up during or after rounds is one of the most consistent signals of a T-spine limitation driving swing compensation.

Glute Activation and Firing Pattern

Why you can have strong glutes and still not be using them in your swing

The glutes are the primary power producers in the golf swing. When your lead glute fires correctly through the downswing, it drives hip rotation, creates the deceleration that transfers energy up the kinematic chain, and stabilizes the pelvis through impact. Take the glutes offline and you're asking your arms to generate power they were never designed to produce.

Prolonged sitting causes hip flexors to tighten and reciprocally inhibit the glutes — the nervous system stops reliably activating them. You can have perfectly strong glutes and still have poor firing patterns. Strength in the gym doesn't equal activation in the swing. This shows up as a timing issue: the hips don't fully drive, you lose hip-shoulder separation, and the arms take over.

The single-leg glute bridge test: Lie on your back with knees bent. Lift one foot off the floor and bridge up on the other leg. Hold for 5 seconds. Feel where the work is happening.

Single Leg Stability Deficit

The physical reason Kiawah's back nine is a different game than the front

The golf swing requires each leg to independently support the full weight of the body and the forces of the swing. At impact, your lead leg is bearing load, stabilizing, and posting up as the hips drive through. If the stability isn't there, the sequence compensates — and under fatigue, it collapses.

When single-leg stability is poor, you'll hold it together under low-stress conditions — the range, early in a round, when you're fresh. Under fatigue or pressure, the stability breaks and compensations cascade. It's not mental. The stabilization baseline is running out.

Inefficient Kinematic Sequencing

Why swinging harder produces less distance — and what to do about it

Clubhead speed is not about how hard you swing. It's about how efficiently energy transfers from your body to the club. The research on elite golfers shows a consistent sequence: hips initiate, then the thorax, then the lead arm, then the club. Each segment decelerates and hands off energy to the next — like a whip.

When physical restrictions exist anywhere in the chain — restricted hips, limited T-spine, inhibited glutes, poor single-leg stability — the sequence breaks. Energy leaks. You swing harder and get less speed. Overspeed training only works when the physical foundation is in place. Loading an inefficient sequence just reinforces the inefficiency.

Sit on the floor with both legs bent at 90 degrees — front leg forward, back leg behind. Spine tall.

  3. Return upright and repeat
